After crash kills six, drunk driver gets 30 years

A woman in California was involved in a deadly accident, in which she was accused of driving under the influence. She recently went to court and was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison.

The woman was heading north on the Orange Freeway, driving a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro, but she was in the southbound lanes. She actually made it off of that freeway without incident, but she then got on the 60 Freeway, heading east in the westbound lanes. It was there that she ran her sports car into a Ford Explorer.

In the Camaro, the woman's 21-year-old friend and her 24-year-old sister both passed away in the accident. In the Explorer, four people from three different generations died. The oldest was a grandmother at 80 years old, while the youngest was just 20. The parents of the 20-year-old, a couple in their 40s, died as well.

In fact, the only person to live through the accident was the intoxicated driver behind the wheel of the Camaro.

According to the Deputy District Attorney, the woman's blood alcohol concentration wasn't taken for about three hours. Even so, it was still double the legal limit, at 0.15 percent. A level that high so long after the fact showed that the driver had consumed much more than just a single drink. It would have taken numerous drinks to get her BAC high enough that it could not even get back under the 0.08 percent limit in three hours.

For a grieving family, a prison sentence may give them some sense of closure, but it does not address the very real financial costs of a situation like this. Those facing lost wages, high funeral costs and medical bills after losing a loved one in an accident caused by a drunk driver may still need to know more about the financial compensation available.
